Introduction to Hindu Deities and Texts

Hinduism is one of the oldest and most complex religions in the world, with a rich history and a vast array of deities and texts.

  • The Vedas, the oldest Hindu scriptures, are a collection of hymns, prayers, and philosophical discussions.
  • The Upanishads, which come after the Vedas, explore the nature of the self and the ultimate reality.
  • The Puranas, a collection of stories and legends, provide insight into the mythology and cosmology of Hinduism.

The Trimurti, a concept in Hinduism, refers to the three primary aspects of the divine: Brahma, the creator; Vishnu, the preserver; and Shiva, the destroyer.

  • Brahma, the creator, is often depicted with four heads, representing the four Vedas.
  • Vishnu, the preserver, is often depicted as a blue-skinned god with four arms, holding a conch shell, a discus, a mace, and a lotus flower.
  • Shiva, the destroyer, is often depicted as a fierce-looking god with a serpent around his neck and a trident in his hand.
