Tanmatras

Tanmatras in Hinduism

What are Tanmatras?

Tanmatras are the five fundamental elements or principles of the universe in Hindu philosophy. They are the building blocks of the material and spiritual worlds.

Tanmatras: The Five Elements

  • 1. Akasha (Space) - The infinite and boundless expanse of space, the sky, and the universe.
  • 2. Vayu (Air) - The element of air, wind, and breath.
  • 3. Agni (Fire) - The element of fire, light, and heat.
  • 4. Jala (Water) - The element of water, life, and nourishment.
  • 5. Prithvi (Earth) - The element of earth, solidity, and materiality.

Tanmatras in the Upanishads

In the Upanishads, Tanmatras are described as the five senses - sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.

Tanmatras in Yoga

In yoga, Tanmatras are associated with the five koshas (sheaths) - the physical, energetic, intellectual, blissful, and divine.
