Syama Sastri (1924-2014) was a renowned Indian classical music composer, singer, and teacher. He was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, on December 28, 1924.

Early Life and Education

  • Syama Sastri was born into a musical family and was exposed to classical music from a very young age.
  • He began his music training at the age of 5 under the guidance of his father, Srinivasan Sastri.
  • He later studied under the legendary Carnatic music composer, T. V. Sathyamoorthy.

Career

  • Syama Sastri made his public debut as a singer at the age of 12.
  • He composed his first song at the age of 15.
  • He went on to compose over 2,000 songs during his lifetime.

Teaching and Legacy

Syama Sastri was a highly respected teacher and mentor, who trained many notable musicians, including the legendary Carnatic singer, Lata Mangeshkar.

  • He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award, in 2010.
  • He was also awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, India's highest award for music and dance.
