Shuddhadvaita

History

Shuddhadvaita is a school of thought that emerged in the 16th century in the Indian subcontinent.

It is a reform movement within the Advaita Vedanta tradition, which emphasizes the non-dual nature of reality.

The movement was founded by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a Bengali saint who is considered the founder of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition.

Shuddhadvaita is also known as Gaudiya Advaita or Vaishnava Advaita.

Philosophy

Shuddhadvaita is a philosophical system that emphasizes the ultimate reality of Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

It posits that Krishna is the supreme reality, and that the individual self (jiva) is a spark of Krishna's divine essence.

The movement also emphasizes the importance of devotion (bhakti) as the means of realizing Krishna's presence in one's life.

Principles

Shuddhadvaita is characterized by several key principles, including:

  • The ultimate reality of Krishna
  • The non-dual nature of reality
  • The importance of devotion (bhakti)
  • The individual self (jiva) as a spark of Krishna's divine essence
  • The importance of surrender (isvarasaktya) to Krishna
