Historical Vedic Religion
The Vedic period, also known as the Vedic civilization, was the first urbanized phase of the Indian civilization, spanning from around 1500 BCE to 500 BCE.
- The Vedas, the oldest and most sacred texts of Hinduism, were composed during this period.
- The Vedic people were skilled craftsmen, traders, and warriors.
- Their society was divided into four varnas: Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (merchants), and Shudras (labourers).
The Vedic people worshipped a pantheon of gods and goddesses, including Indra, Agni, Varuna, and Vishnu.
- The Rigveda, one of the four Vedas, contains hymns and prayers to these deities.
- The Vedic people believed in the concept of karma and rebirth.
- They also believed in the concept of the ultimate reality, Brahman.
