About Basava
Basava was a 12th-century Indian saint and philosopher from the Vachana movement, a devotional movement that emphasized personal devotion to a deity and the rejection of caste and social hierarchy.
- Born around 1130 CE in the village of Basavangudi near present-day Bangalore, Karnataka, India
- Renowned for his teachings on the importance of love, compassion, and service to all living beings
- Believed in the concept of "Anugraha", which means "the divine pleasure" or "the joy of the divine"
- Preached against the caste system and advocated for social equality and justice
- Was a strong advocate for the rights of the poor, women, and children
- Was a prolific writer and composed numerous poems, songs, and philosophical treatises
