Artha

Artha: The Ancient Indian Vedic Concept

Artha is a Sanskrit word that means "purpose", "meaning", or "value". It is a central concept in ancient Indian philosophy, particularly in the Vedas and Upanishads.

  • Artha is considered one of the four puruṣārthas (human purposes) in Hinduism, along with dharma (duty), kama (pleasure), and moksha (liberation).
  • Artha is often translated as "wealth" or "prosperity", but its meaning goes beyond material wealth to include spiritual and philosophical growth.
  • The concept of artha is closely tied to the idea of dharma, which is the moral and ethical order of the universe.

Artha is also associated with the concept of "guna" (quality) in Hindu philosophy, which refers to the three fundamental attributes of reality: sattva (purity), rajas (activity), and tamas (darkness).
